Army book 1

Yesterday I uploaded the first army book to Lulu as well. Now at least all the stuff that has been finalized is available to get hold of somewhere.

The lulu publications are nice, although a bit hard to find if you dont know where to look (for those who don’t know already my books are here: http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/arnfelt)

The advantage is I can use the little time I have to try and do new stuff (like the Austrian army list) or finish stuff that has been almost ready for years (the campaign game rules) instead of focusing on the printing side.

It’s a bit more expensive than the rules though as it includes colour illustrations and the lulu model doesn’t distinguish between colour or b/w pages, it treats the entire thing as a colour publication.

If there’s enough interest I might do a black and white version (or one with even more colour illustrations)

Games at LinCon

This year’s gaming convention in Linköping (my current hometown) didn’t get my full attention as it coincided with various other events at home. But I made a brief visit at least.

We played some Gå På demo games. That was as always great fun. It is quite enjoyable to see the reactions on people as they try to convince their units to do what they want them to do. The most enjoyable thing though with Gå På try outs is that almost always both players leave with a smile on their face, even the player who “lost” the game.

There was also another Gå På game going. The battle of Helsingborg in 6mm. Must say that the scale makes the armies look really cool.

I also played some DBMM. Had promised I would take part in the DBMM200 tournament. However I didn’t have the time to think about it beforehand. So scribbled down an army list 5 minutes before start time. Needless to say, it was totally flawed, and combined with some poor die rolling it meant I ended up last…

Bought a book, a few wings of glory planes, and watched some cool games as well. And then back home for Birthday parties and stuff… All in all a good weekend.

Samnites – organisation

My Samnite Army, Plans

Ok so in order to make the army more interesting I decided to actually create a framework for it. As the Romans are said to have based some of their reforms on their experiences with the Samnites, I decided to go for a “Roman-style” organistation. N.B. the organisation is invented by myself, loosely based on the Roman organisation at the time, as described by Livy and Polybius.

The army was designed to be used with the DBMM rules. But I suppose it could be used for anything that uses stands/elements.

The Theoretical strength of a Legion is as follows:

1 Legion = 3000 men (to a maximum of 4200) => 192-200 men per element => 15 element (max 21)

1 Legion = 3 Classes => 5 elements in each class (max 7)

In addition, each legion has one element (roughly 200 horsemen) of cavalry attached to it.

Each legion uses a distinct colour combination. Each class within the legion has a distinct, uniform, pattern.

The Silver legion, or the White/Linen Legion (Legio Lineata – White, silver armour)

Notes on the Tribes:

The Samnites were composed of at least four tribes:

  • the Pentri (the most important tribe, capital: Bovianum),
  • the Caraceni (principal cities: Cluviae, the modern Casoli, and Juvanum, the ruins of which are spread between Torricella Peligna and Montenerodomo),
  • the Caudini (capital: Caudium, today Montesarchio)
  • and the Hirpini (Oscan for wolf; capital Beneventum),
  • and later may have been joined by the Frentani (capital Larinum, the modern Larino).

The federal capital of the federal League they formed was Bovianum, except for a short period between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, in which it was Aquilonia, destroyed by Romans in 293 BC, whose probable location today is modern Aquilonia, in Campania, province Avellino.

Off to LinCon tomorrow

Tomorrow I’m off to the annual games convention in Linköping.

A lot of Gå På, most likely some DBMM, loads of chatting, and very likely a lot of money spending.

Samnites – the Silver Legion

Back in 2008 I started collecting a Samnite army. I decided to create a fictional organisation for it to make it more fun for myself. So I organised the army into legions, based on the various tribes of the Samnite federation, and then added the “legendary” Legio Lineata, or Silver legion as an elite legion. […]
